2022 Taekwondo World Grand Prix Day Three Results in Manchester

The third and last day of Taekwondo World Grand Prix Manchester 2022 seen Lorena Brandl to make amends for his defeat in the +67 kg final at the European Championships.

The German avenged their Munich home loss to the British Bianca Cook in the quarter-finals before beating Poland Aleksandra Kowalczuk.

In the final, Brandl needed all three sets to beat France Althea Laurin with the 25-year-old visibly beaming as the seconds count down after an incredible hook kick took her to a 5-2 lead.

Laurin needed a headshot that didn’t come, and Brandl got the title.

Xu Lei of China and Kowalczuk both won bronze.

Seo Geon-Woo defeats Simone Alessio for gold

Seo Geon Woo didn’t mess around in the men’s -80kg final, scoring a spot at the start which he held on to win the first round.

The South Korean knew he had to take the initiative against the shapeless Simone Alessio who had won the previous two Grands Prix in Paris and Rome, but it was not the Italian’s day with Seo taking the second round 7-6 to claim the title.

South Korea Hwan Namgoong and Tunisia Firas Katousi shared bronze.

Maicon Siqueira just beat home favorite Cunningham

Despite a lot of home support, Caden Cunningham just lost in the third round of the men’s +80kg final to the Rio 2016 bronze medalist Maicon Siqueira.

With 20 seconds left in the decider, Brazil’s Siqueira moved ahead before a double kick to the body secured him the 4-1 set and the title.

Cunningham thrilled the crowd earlier with a semi-final triumph over the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medalist Cheick Salla Cisse.

The hard fight ended the Manchester Grand Prix with athletes clutching medals, winner’s checks and some all-important ranking points to qualify for Paris 2024.

Next up is the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Final which will take place in the Saudi capital Riyadh in early December.
