Airdrie Karate Kids in medals on maiden voyage abroad

A young duo from Lanarkshire Karate Academy in Airdrie were in great shape as they won two medals each in their very first overseas event.

Nine-year-old Emmie McEwan and Sebastian Magilton traveled to Berlin for the Banzai Cup and Emmie returned from Germany with a silver and a bronze, while Sebastian won two bronze medals.

The duo were part of a four-person squad that competed alongside Jayden Warwick, eight, and Leah Colquhoun, 14, who narrowly missed the addition to the club’s fantastic medal harvest.

They only entered the competition last month when Covid restrictions relaxed enough to allow them to make the trip to Europe, and it was worth it in the club’s first competition since the March 2020 pandemic.

Club coach Chantelle Allan said: “We booked it only three weeks ago so it was a bit of a last minute thing just to try and get them to compete.

“It was great to have a small team away from home.

“It is also the first time that they have traveled abroad for a competition.

“There were 20 different nations and over 1000 competitors there, so for them to come in is a big achievement.

“This is the first we have done in 18 months since we had to stop for Covid.

“We have a group of 10 students who are going to Belgium in a few weeks, so it’s back to competitions and everyone is really excited about it.”

Emmie won silver in the women’s under-10 kata and bronze in the women’s under-10 kumite. Sebastian won bronze in the same events for boys under 10.

Chantelle added, “They both did very well in their first international event, particularly in the kumite / fight event with Emmie winning five fights and Sebastian winning four.”

The club currently has 10 competing members, but is always looking for new members.

The Lanarkshire Karate Club welcomes new students from the age of four.

The club is based at Alexander Street in Airdrie, ML6 0BA, and offers classes six days a week.

Chantelle added: “We have a special offer right now, where the first month is free and anyone who signs up gets a free karate costume.”
