Boxers break two school records in first indoor track meet

Newberg, Oregon and Portland, Oregon – This weekend marked the first indoor track meet of the 2022 season. Erik Mack and Garrett Stewart set new school records for the men’s team. Maack broke the 3,000-metre indoor record with a fourth-place finish in 8:35.13. The previous record was 8:42., set by Tyler Shipley in 2013. Garrett Stewart broke the men’s 600 meters record with a fourth-place finish in 1:24.07. The previous record was 1:24.89, set by Gary Fanelli in 2014.

“It’s been a great start to the season,” said the athletics head coach Ryan Hunter Simms. “Several athletes set new PRs, broke two school records and it was just the first competition of the year. It’s great to be back and competing indoors.”

It was the first indoor meet the boxers have appeared in since 2020, when the season was canceled in warmups for the NCAA Indoor Nationals due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The Boxers competed first at George Fox on Saturday, where the 60m, hurdles and field events were contested. Next, the team traveled to the University of Portland on Sunday to compete in the sprint and distance events. In addition to two new school records, several athletes set new personal bests in their respective events over the weekend.

“I’m really excited about this start to the season,” said the athletics assistant coach Custodian Chest. “The school records are impressive and overall the athletes competed well today. There’s still a lot of work to do, but it’s a great start for us.”

The Boxers will be back on the track on Saturday February 5 at the University of Portland and George Fox.
