THE JAMAICA Boxing Board supports the activities of Top Level Gym in Montego Bay after seeing the holistic approach they have taken to the sport.
The gymnasium is run in association with St Christopher’s Nursing, Electrical and Engineering Academy in the heart of Montego Bay on Jarrett Street.
The gymnasium started late last year with professional boxer Germaine Bowen as its main trainer. Bowen is assisted by boxer Jasmine Graham.
The gymnasium caters to the students of the academy and the community of Montego Bay as a whole. Most of the trainees are women, who study nursing at the academy. Several of them have spoken of the benefits of learning the sport and some are considering becoming professional boxers.
JBB President Stephen ‘Bomber’ Jones endorses what the gym is trying to achieve, and his organization has contributed boxing gear, like gloves and punching bags and intends to donate a boxing ring to them. boxing in the near future. The equipment was provided by the International Boxing Association (AIBA).
“Every time I come [to the gym]I’m more blown away than before,” Jones said, pointing out that the gym mixes a lot of personal development ideals with boxing.
“We usually lead on the boxing side and then move on to personal development. What you have here with the languages, nursing program and electrical engineering is just a complete dream for the boxing board, not just for me, because it gives us a leg up on the game” , said Jones.
The JBB President also expressed satisfaction with the number of women in the program.
Dr Lola Cunningham, head of the academy, spearheaded the introduction of the gymnasium as part of the facility’s offering due to the positive impact it has had on her daughter, which leads to it.
The Top Level Boxing Gym also has the approval of the St James Municipal Corporation.
