Boxing News: Iron Man Charlo Becomes First Undisputed Welterweight Champion In History

Jermell ‘Iron Man’ Charlo made boxing history by knocking out Brian Castano to win the WBO welterweight title.

By winning the belt, Iron Man unifies it with the WBC, WBA, IBF titles for the very first time in boxing.

He is only the seventh person in any weight class to hold all belts in a single weight class from all four major boxing sanctioning bodies.

The others were Bernard Hopkins (middleweight), Jermain Taylor (middleweight), Terence Crawford (super-lightweight), Oleksandr Usyk (cruiserweight), Josh Taylor (super-lightweight) and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (super-middleweight).

Charlo and Castano battled to an exciting but sadly controversial draw in 2021 and it looked like this fight was headed in a similar direction after the pair split the early rounds.

However, Charlo got stronger as the fight continued where Castano seemed to start to tire around the eighth round.

The American hopped on a few openings to land a hard right hook followed by a left to the head to send Castano sprawling on the canvas.

Seizing his advantage, Charlo didn’t let go and started right away when Castano got back to his feet.

A strong left to the face saw the Argentine’s head roll back before another left to the body sent him to the ground to end the fight.

“It’s amazing,” Charlo said. “I gave it my all and that was the end result. It was nerve wracking. It was like my first fight, where you get nervous. I had ants in my pants.

“I knew Castano was going to give it my all and I trained very hard. I was in great shape.

“I was pretty sure he was going to get back up because it was just the first knockdown – but I knew it was over,” Charlo said.

Castano showed he had no hard feelings after the fight and praised his opponent for a good fight.

“Everything that happened in the ring tonight showed us that we are warriors,” he said.

“We were both fighting back and forth. It was a strong back and forth and then his right hand came and stopped the fight. He’s a champ. He hit me. He knocked me out. had. But I’m fine.”
