Cobra Kai Creators Address Potential Hilary Swank Appearance

Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg definitely wants Karate Kid’s biggest star, Hilary Swank, to join the cast of the Netflix show.

Hilary Swank Cobra Kai

Cobra Kai never dies and neither does the past because the creators of the series are well aware of a certain Karate Kid graduate who they may want to bring to Netflix in the future, two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank.

Swank starred in the 1994s The Next Karate Kid as Julie Pierce, the franchise’s first female protagonist, though she certainly didn’t enjoy the same success as Ralph Macchio in the first two films under Mr. Miyagi’s mentorship. Nevertheless, despite being universally panned by critics and an outright commercial failure, The Next Karate Kid was Swank’s biggest role early in his career, partly due to his performance in the film.

Given the stellar trajectory she’s had, it’s no wonder Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg would like Swank to reprise her role. However, for now, he’s quite shy to reveal if she was indeed added to the season five cast. In a special panel for Deadline, Schlossberg insisted Cobra Kai is the show to watch to see if that happens, simply remarking, “Anything is possible. Julie Pierce is one of the toys in the toy box, so we’ll see.”

The question follows the very logic of the showrunners, because so far Cobra Kai took a trip to Karate Kid 2” Okinawa, bringing Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita) and Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) back. After, Cobra Kai season 4 was dedicated to the return of Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). Of course, probably the biggest obstacle to continuing this trend would be convincing an actor of Swank’s caliber to take up his karate lesson one more time.

Although Swank is a somewhat selective actor, there is an odd chance that she still holds The Next Karate Kid close to his heart and can be persuaded by the same nostalgia that made Cobra Kai such a hit for Netflix. If it’s not season 5 already filmed, which still has to deal with the fallout of Silver’s villainous schemes, then season 6 could indeed be the one that does. Cobra Kai shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, and the writers have many more seasons planned.

The show’s production values have steadily increased since the show left YouTube for Netflix and there’s already an impressive number of fighters in the Cobra Kai cast. Swank is no stranger to fighting of course, as his crowning acting job came with Clint Eastwood Million dollar baby so maybe there is even more chance of this happening than initially thought.

Cobra Kai seasons 1-2 are now available on Netflix.
