Jennifer Gray to star in ‘Dirty Dancing’ sequel

Hope we have the time of our lives.

During Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation this week, as the company promoted its upcoming projects to assembled members of the movie theater industry, the studio confirmed that it was working on a new dirty dance film starring one of the two protagonists of the 80s classic. According to Weekly entertainmenta sizzle reel included footage from the original dirty dance while a voiceover said “Jennifer Gray is returning to Kellerman in the next chapter.” Kellerman’s was the name of the Catskills resort where Grey’s Baby fell in love with Patrick Swayze’s Johnny at first Dirty dance.

Before you get too excited for dirty dancing again, know that this project has already been discussed. In the summer of 2020, a Gris-dos dirty dance sequel was first reported. Two years later, it doesn’t seem like much progress has been made in the meantime.

dirty dance was not a huge hit in theaters – it was only the 16th highest-grossing film of 1987 – but it became a phenomenon on home video and cable. Its continued popularity inspired a prequel called Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights in 2004 it had little to do with the original beyond the basic idea of sexy dancing, although Patrick Swayze did make a cameo in the film. (Swayze died in 2009 after a battle with cancer.)

There was also a dirty dance stage show, as well as a TV series and TV movie remake in 2017. None matched the success and popularity of the original – but none had Jennifer Gray playing Baby. So we’ll see what happens this time.
