Shahzaib beats Indian rival to win taekwondo gold in Nepal

Young Pakistani athlete Shahzaib Khan has outclassed Indian Aman Kumar to win a gold medal at the 3rd Mount Everest International Taekwondo Championships taking place in Pokhara, Nepal.

Shahzaib emerged triumphant in a tough Kyorugi -54kg event contest.

In the first round, Shahzaib easily defeated Kumar 7-4, but his opponent fought back in the second round to win 12-11.

However, in the third round, Shahzaib edged out Kumar after a sensational contest to seal it 7-6 and claim the precious gold medal for his country in style.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, Shahzaib beat India’s Kushal Malhotra 5-4, 11-2.

On the women’s side, Pakistan’s Naqsh Hamdani won the bronze medal. She was beaten by her Indian counterpart in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in the -80kg competition, Pakistan’s Mazhar Abbas triumphed in his first bout against India’s Kanifnath Pokale, beating the latter comfortably 12-1 in the first round. Mazhar wrapped up the fight after picking up a 7-4 victory in the second round.

On the other hand, in the first round of the Men’s -58 kg category, Pakistan’s Haroon Khan won his first fight against Yaiphaba Meetei Loktong after beating his Indian counterpart 5-0 in the first round of a one-sided competition. Haroon continued his dominance by winning the second round 8-1.

The Pakistani female athletes also performed superbly and in the women’s -57kg category, young Noor Rahman won her first bout against Thalapitigoda Kottengangoda of Sri Lanka 3-2, 14-4.
