‘That’s what happens when the referee cheats’: Boxing World reacts as video of controversial stoppage resurfaces


Boxing is a brutal sport that can often cause serious harm to those involved. Besides the two boxers involved, even the referee inside the ring is often in danger. This video, which is once again making the rounds on the internet, is proof of that.

Dating from 2014, the video shows a boxing match between Croatian boxer Vido Loncar (red) and Lithuanian Algirdas Baniulis (blue). The latter started the fight with a flurry of punches. This led the referee, Magej Dziurgot, to intervene.

The Polish referee then called both contestants and declared Baniulis the winner. Loncar apparently disagreed with the result and savagely attacked the referee, knocking him to the ground. He lands powerful strikes that hurt Dziurgot and can only be stopped when he is dragged out of the ring by his ankles. Not to mention that while his opponent assaulted the referee, Baniulis sprinted out of the ring.

According reportsLoncar has been suspended for life by the national boxing federation after his attack on the referee during the European Youth Championship in Zagreb.

Fans reacted when Vido Loncar brutally beat the referee

The World Boxing Organization, European Boxing Organization and other prominent boxing organizations received an apology from the Croatian Federation after the incident. Witnessing this surprising event, here’s what fans must have say.

A fan felt that was wrong of the boxer and he wrote: “It’s called an assault!” I hope he was prosecuted!!”

“This is what happens when the referee cheats” another fan added.

Someone pointed out the referee’s mistake and said, “Refree is corrupt!” Blaming the boxer entirely is not correct! There are always 2 sides to every coin!

Another fan mentioned“Well, I hope the referee learned a good lesson after that.”

“Damn, the other boxer didn’t even bother to try to stop the guy. Wth.

“Something was wrong with the ref to stop the fight looking a bit biased.”

A fan wrote“Looks like the referee got paid and then he was punished.”

“It was of course fixed. He got what he deserved hoping he never does it again.
