Hi-yes! Kicklines have always been a part of Broadway musicals, but what about circle kicks? Maybe it’s time for them to shine: The Karate Kid, the classic 1984 film, is in the process of being adapted into a musical and will be tested before Broadway in the spring of 2022.
According to a Casting Notice, the show will hold working sessions this fall. The new musical features a book by film writer Robert Mark Kamen and music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini (Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical). Famous Japanese director Amon Miyamoto, whose Broadway debut with Pacific openings makes him the first Asian director on Broadway, directs the production, and MTV VMA nominees Keone Madrid and Mari Madrid choreograph the heavy piece of movement. The Karate Kid will feature the stage design by Tony and two-time Emmy Award winner Derek McLane.
The original film starred Ralph Macchio, Noriyuki “Pat” Morita (who received an Oscar nomination) and Elisabeth Shue. Following the success of the film, which sparked immense interest in karate across the country, two sequels followed, as well as an animated television series and YouTube Premium’s “Cobra Kai”, currently in production for its third season. .
