Thomas Ian Griffith played the role of Terry Silver, an evil billionaire, who happens to be a skilled martial artist, in the 1989 film “The Karate Kid Part III”. In the film, he helps his friend John Kreese (Martin Kove) take down Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) by any means necessary. The businessman goes so far as to employ violent professional martial artist Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan) to make Daniel’s life even more difficult.
Thomas Ian Griffith revealed Martin Kove and Sean Kanan didn’t recognize him
In a July interview on the “Cobra Kai KompanionPodcast, Griffith shared that despite being co-stars, Kove and Kanan didn’t recognize him at an “event.” The 59-year-old did not specify the year of the meeting, but hinted that some time had passed since the filming of “The Karate Kid Part III”. He explained that he and his wife actress Mary Page Keller “were having dinner at one place and there was an event upstairs and someone said oh [the] the guys from ‘Karate Kid’ are up there. This announcement caught Griffith’s attention and he decided to go see his cast mates.
“I saw Sean and Marty. They were standing there and I walked over and I said hey, is this a ‘Karate Kid’ reunion? And they both looked at me and had no idea who I was, ”Griffith said.
The actor attributed his difference in appearance to why his “Karate Kid Part III” co-stars couldn’t recognize him.
“I’m going wow, I have to look like shit or – because my hair turned white or I had a beard, whatever it was,” the actor said.
He said they finally realized who he was and that they “had fun” together. He then shared that “when [he] first walked [he] think[s]Kove and Kanan felt like “they were being chased by a fan following them,” which they didn’t seem to like.
“They were like a walking dude,” Griffith said.

In a separate interview with “Cobra Kai Kompanion”, uploaded in 2018, Sean Kanan discussed screen sharing with Kove and Griffith. He shared that having Kove as a stage partner “was amazing” because he “was a fan” of the “Karate Kid” movies before being cast as Mike Barnes. The actor went on to say he was “actually a very close friend” to the 75-year-old.
“He’s absolutely one of the nicest guys on the planet. It’s like an uncle to me. I would say Marty is like an uncle. And I have so much love for the guy it’s amazing to have gone from being that 19 year old kid on set to now I’m going to be 52 next month in November and now Marty and I are friends Kanan said. “You know, I know his son and I’m friends with his son, Jesse. So for me, it was one of the best gifts of the experience to forge this friendship with Marty.
Kanan also noted that “working with Thomas Ian Griffith was great”.
“I mean he’s, you know, he’s a great actor. He was a lot of fun. He created a larger than life character and you know he and I really enjoyed working together, ”said the 54-year-old.
