World Taekwondo revokes Putin’s taekwondo belt

Russian President Vladimir Putin is under enormous pressure due to his recent attacks on Ukraine.

Besides the sanctions imposed on Russia because of Putin, the president now faces another blow from the international community, being stripped of his honorary 9th dan black belt in taekwondo.

Taekwondo is based on five basic principles: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. World Taekwondo awarded the 9th Dan Taekwondo belt to the Russian President, hoping he would reinforce these beliefs which are the backbone of the Korean martial art.

However, Russia’s ongoing atrocities in Ukraine have prompted many organizations to apply sanctions against it.

World Taekwondo President Choue Chung-won believes Putin’s recent actions are enough to deny him the honorary belt.

According to the statement released by World Taekwondo on February 28:

“Peace is more precious than triumph and World Taekwondo values respect and tolerance.”

He further stated, “In this regard, World Taekwondo has decided to revoke the honorary 9th dan black belt conferred on Mr. Vladimir Putin in November 2013.”

Russia and Belarus now face numerous penalties at the Olympics. They are not allowed to take their flags or play their national anthems during the games.

Additionally, sports like football, basketball, ice hockey and many more have banned Russian athletes from competing.
